Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. Of volcanic origin, it is mountainous and surrounded by coral reefs. Tahiti is the economic, cultural and political center of French Polynesia, and boasts the region's only international airport. Tahiti is divided into two parts: Tahiti Nui, the larger part to the northwest, and Tahiti Iti, the smaller part to the southeast. The interior of Tahiti Nui is almost entirely uninhabited, and the southeastern half of Tahiti Iti is accessible only to those traveling by boat or on foot. The rest of the island is encircled by a main road between mountains and sea. A scenic, winding inland road leads past dairy farms and citrus groves. On land or at sea, Tahiti offers visitors a wide choice of activities. Thanks to its vast size, Tahiti boasts numerous sites that are sure to delight all divers: from the Trois Pitons, where the cool spring water is much appreciated by turtles, to the Jardins de Roses, via the caves and Tombants of the peninsula.
