Fakarava is the second-largest atoll in the Tuamotus, and lies to the west of the island. It is roughly rectangular in shape, 60 km long and 2 km wide. Fakarava has a wide, deep lagoon with a surface area of 1112 km². The lagoon is made up of two passes: the main pass, to the northwest, better known as Passe Garuae. It is 1.6 km wide, making it the largest pass in French Polynesia. The second is to the south, also known as Tumakohua or Tetamanu. Fakarava was recognized as a -Biosphere Reserve- by UNESCO in 2009 and is one of the world's top 5 destinations for scuba diving. With its clear water and visibility of over 30 meters, its diverse and abundant fauna, magnificent corals and walls of sharks, you're sure to experience one of the most beautiful dives of your life!
